Hola, Leila.

Hi Leila! That sounds really exciting. I'm only about 2 semesters away from a formal bachelors degree that I had to abandon during a personal crisis. I was studying Public Health, and ironically, the institution I was studying at didn't have any grace for the adverse effects it had on the mental health of their students...so silly. I have to tell myself this all the time, so I'll say it out loud for you: NO time spent learning is a waste of time!! Learning is always a good use of time. Even if you make it right up to the end and have to bow out at last moment, pursuit of knowledge is always worth it. Even without formal recognition or a piece of paper.

I can't wait to read about your findings. And also I'm a big fan of my Singer Heavy Duty 4411 if you need a reccomendation....it was fairly inexpensive and seems pretty sturdy for a home sewing machine.

For my personal grassroots education, I'm generally interested in the question of how the past influences the present. Especially how histories that are erased and suppressed still pull on the present moment. Required reading for this would def have to be One Hundred Years of Solitude. I'm rereading it again lately.

Hi Jeremy,

It's disappointing how often people in fields like psychology & medicine don't get to prioritize their own wellness, it feels like the systems in place offer them up as sacrificial lambs with the expectation to give until they've burnt out. Care work and public service is so undervalued but I'm glad you took a moment to tend to your own dis-ease at the time. Thank you for this potent reminder that learning is never in vain even when it doesn't follow a linear route.

Also thank you so much for the sewing machine rec, I've been mulling over different options suited for upcycling or quilting so this is so helpful!

There's so much to dissect around our conceptions of time, I particularly love magical realism as a way to play with past and present. One Hundred Years of Solitude has been on my waitlist, maybe it's time I dive into that one. If you're in the spooky mood, my sister recently recommended a graphic novel called My Favorite Thing Is Monsters which seems to explore similar themes.
