The Painted Veil is…

a newsletter that explores fashion, art, death, grief, nature & visual storytelling.

Offerings 🦪

I’ll be sharing multimedia essays, research notes, personal curations, free resources, works in process, and creative updates 2x a month on Thursdays. There will also be sporadic creative exercises, writing prompts, memorial & fundraising quilts, and links to mutual aid funds.

Behind the Veil 🪡

I’m a Palestinian & Guatemalan fashion & jewelry designer. In my personal practice, I use textiles & multimedia collage with second-hand materials to explore diasporic archives, ancestral veneration, and healing through grief.

As a Palestinian with my paternal family in Gaza, I ask that you please consider donating to their gofundme, every contribution supports their survival!

Intentions 🕊️

Beyond a newsletter, I hope this vessel serves as a digital altar, counter archive, memory enclave, public journal, research container, extension of my art, and worldbuilding praxis that resists the dehumanization & silencing of my peoples.

Your support, time, and attention mean a lot. Thank you. I hope you subscribe.

Lift Not The Painted Veil 🕯️

The title for this project comes from the sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1824:

Lift not the painted veil which those who live
Call Life: though unreal shapes be pictured there,
And it but mimic all we would believe
With colours idly spread,—behind, lurk Fear
And Hope, twin Destinies; who ever weave
Their shadows, o'er the chasm, sightless and drear.
I knew one who had lifted it—he sought,
For his lost heart was tender, things to love,
But found them not, alas! nor was there aught
The world contains, the which he could approve.
Through the unheeding many he did move,
A splendour among shadows, a bright blot
Upon this gloomy scene, a Spirit that strove
For truth, and like the Preacher found it not.
